The new mini-brief is to illustrate a proverb which will become a drinks coaster as part of promotion for a new soft drink 'Proverb'. Which is quite a fun 'real-life' challenge I thought, as it's something that could pop up in an Illustrators mailbox one morning and they might have to come up with ideas and a concept for the product within just a few hours to show the company if they wanted the work.
Anyhow here are a couple rough ideas that I put together.
I was really keen to do develop the bird idea, even though I wasn't fully aware of what the composition would be. I used a new programme to me - SketchBook that I downloaded from the App Store. I really love the softness of the pencil on here, it's really responsive and for me felt exactly like using a pencil (visually of course, haha). I took a screenshot of the sketching process and the setup of the programme itself.
Then using the image reference I used similar colours of the humming bird as I think they go together so well. I picked the colours myself as I thought the image I was using was quite dark, here's a screenshot of the process...
