We had our final guest speaker Andy Robert Davies visit today! I had the chance of meeting Andy prior to starting the Illustration Course so was quite familiar with his work and style. Which is really colourful, playful and recognisable. But it was great to see more 'behind the scenes' and be given in-depth information on the true life of being an illustrator. Andy talked about personal experiences of starting out as an illustrator, building up a strong portfolio to personal assessments that freelance artists need to manage (sounds like scary stuff, haha). Andy gave a wonderful talk with a lot of valuable information that I'm sure will come in handy one day!
Andy also explained how competitions are pretty important and really useful for exposure even if you aren't a winner. Simply submitting artwork and having your work seen is beneficial in itself. I really like one of Andy's pieces that he created for a competition 'Birds of Paradise'. I think the composition is beautifully thought out with a quirky look to it. And the simple shades of blue palette add to the atmosphere of the scene.
My favourites of Andy's works are those inspired by his visit to Austria! They really capture the sceneries and I especially enjoyed the stories behind them that he shared with us. Which made me think and really appreciate how amazing having an ability to draw is. Being able to visually show someone what one is thinking or imagining is quite impressive.
Take a look at Andy's social media to see more of his brilliant work:
Thanks for reading,
Nadine
